What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth and holiest month in the Muslim calendar. It begins on a slightly different date each year because the Muslim calendar is different to the Gregorian calendar. It is an important month because it marks when the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed. The Quran is the holy book in Islam.

Images of a moon may be used when people share information about Ramadan as the month begins and ends with the crescent moon.

The end of Ramadan is marked by a festival called Eid al-Fitr, which celebrates the breaking of the fast as well as the blessings Allah has given Muslims.

What do you say to someone at Ramadan?

If you want to wish someone well who is celebrating Ramadan, you might say ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ or ‘Ramadan Kareem’, which mean ‘blessed’ or ‘generous Ramadan’!

How do people celebrate?

Ramadan is a time when people pray. fast, do good deeds, and reflect spiritually. This will often be alongside family and community.

Acts of charity, or Zakat, are one of the five pillars of Islam and are expected during Ramadan. Muslims will also read the Quran, which is read over the month at the mosque.

People who are fasting will do so from sunrise to sunset, eating at sunrise (suhoor) and breaking their fast at sunset with a meal called iftar, often with their community, starting with water and dates.

Celebrations may take place at home or in a mosque.

Fasting resources

There is lots of guidance and information for people who are fasting and want to make sure they are looking after their health, or simply want to know more. Only those who are fit and healthy enough are expected to fast.
